Example of fairy infestation

Example of fairy infestation

Persons are lounging around a place formerly called the Lady Jane Grey College for Little Ladies, now called the Dr. O’Reilly Die to Life Clinic. There is a small chapel abutting the grounds that’s been boarded up since the year 1892, the year a small girl was burnt alive, but where is that girl now? Could she be in hell? But where is hell? And why are faeries hatching out of her skin like the most adorable species of scabies you could ever imagine?

Below is a free download, a recording of a remarkable evening in which Malcolm Felder, Gabriel Boyer, Jeff Black, and the Eugene Community Choir joined hands to recreate the magic of our favorite jazz standards, but how was it to be done? Were they going to play them straight or in a curlicue? Boyer’s velvet voice was offset by his angular piano stylings, while Black wailed on his clarinet in a manner reminiscent of some extinct bird of paradise, the Eugene Community Choir backed up Boyer with their eerie a capella renditions of some big band instrumentation, and Felder rapped his hands round his kit in a series of giddy runs. That man can tease the rhythm out of a lame dog running for its life.

Dr. O’Reilly preaching his Die to Life philosophy

Dr. O’Reilly preaching his Die to Life philosophy

Dr. William O’Reilly’s message is perversion, and what of it? He preaches that his parishoners kill themselves so that they then manifest in hell, only to then kill themselves back into the waking world and so become transplendent, which is not even a word, for earth is the hell of hell, just as hell is the hell of earth. To die in one is to be reborn in the other.

A Purposeful Mistranslation of the Tao
as mistranslated by C. Liszt

(Below is just the beginning of our “purposeful mistranslation” of the Tao. We’ll continue to post more selections of the completed text as they become available.)

1.
Tao as Tao is not Tao. Name as Name is not Name. Heaven and earth began in a nameless place. The ten thousand things were born when each was given a name. To have kept your reason but have lost even the faintest glimmer of a desire, accordingly observe him wonderful in all things, while he who is ruled by his desires, accordingly observe him trapped in a sheer container of his own design, banging at the walls and hollering. These two things (to know without desire and to desire without knowledge) are alike but each different. Both are considered profound. Profundity’s still profound when it leads to the person being trapped in a sheer container of his own design, he then becoming many beautiful things’ entrance.

2.
Everyone under heaven knows beauty as beauty, therefore they know evil too. All know good as good, therefore they know not-good too. Therefore being nothing of themselves, both are born in relation to an opposite other. Difficult and easy both become one another; long and short both stem from the other; high and low both lean toward the other; pitch and mode both are joined in singing; front and back both follow each other.

The sacred person certainly uses one part of the larger dialectical whole, not as a solitary event, but understood in relation to its opposite, carrying out said event not as speech, but as a speechless teaching. The ten thousand things affect the here and now and yet don’t dismiss that which is not here, grow and yet never have more than is necessary, govern over their respective spheres of influence yet do not rely on the things over which they govern, accomplish success yet do not lay claim to their accomplishments. The ordinary man also doesn’t lay claim to his accomplishments, and therefore doesn’t depart from the true path.

Mutable of the Month

Ray Langenbach and his Performance Indoctrination Model (pt2)

| | $ |

I first met Ray Langenbach at a Performance Art Night in the late nineties. I was in the kitchen trying to find something to drink when someone swallowed a microphone. Not one of those hefty mics that you see glam stars fondling with such glee, but one of the tiny ones newscasters wear pinned to their lapels. That was Ray Langenbach, a man my roommate Jason Sanford (of Neptune fame) had met while working at a performance art camp out in Colorado.

Since that time, I have been in contact with him only a few times. We published the manifesto here-in contained (the first half of which was posted last week) in the summer of 2003 and within a collection of manifestos that were printed with copyleft, which means that no one holds the rights to reprint, that these are basically open source materials, the only stipulation being that if a change is made, then it must be noted that a change has been made by the current publisher and where. Ray was responsible for it being published that way as it was only under these conditions that he would allow for us to print his manifesto, and it was largely to publish this manifesto that we had decided to put out the book in the first place.

It has been said that Ray performs theory, and there are some ideas in PIM that remind me of Theodor Adorno, another thinker I was introduced to in the early aughts. Specifically the idea that propaganda is most effective when it’s out in the open, rather than trying to conceal it. Think of the camel for Camel Cigarettes as a subliminal penis versus the ad campaign of ABC wherein a simple phrase such as: “You can talk to your wife any time,” was printed next to the ABC logo. The former attempts to affect you subconsciously, but the latter is more effective specifically because it is uber-conscious.
